President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed an enthusiastic crowd and her cabinet and governors, proclaiming: "We are a sovereign and democratic country." The celebration took place following the announcement that tariffs between Mexico and the United States would be suspended, and the message conveyed was one of optimism regarding the bilateral relationship, while not neglecting the defense of national sovereignty.
Sheinbaum began her speech before a large audience that arrived early and endured the heat of the sun. She emphasized that starting April 2, reciprocal tariffs would be implemented for all countries, which means that tariffs will be imposed on nations that tax U.S. exports. However, she clarified that Mexico would not be affected by this, as it has trade agreements that eliminate mutual tariffs with the United States that have been in place for three decades.
She highlighted the willingness for dialogue from the U.S. government and emphasized the importance of cooperation among neighbors, while underscoring: "We must always be clear, the homeland comes first." She alluded to historical figures such as Vicente Guerrero and Benito Juárez, emphasizing the defense of national sovereignty and the importance of mutual respect among nations.
Additionally, Sheinbaum mentioned the security strategy agreed upon with the United States, including the request to stop the illegal trafficking of weapons, and spoke about migration, indicating a reduction in the number of Mexicans seeking to emigrate for economic reasons. She referred to the solid economy and the political stability of the country, attributing these achievements to the majority support from the population.
The president pointed out that her government remains focused on strengthening the internal market, promoting self-sufficiency in food and energy, fostering public investment, building infrastructure, and boosting national production. She concluded her message by reminding about the upcoming elections for members of the Judiciary in June and celebrating the dialogue and respect that led to the lifting of tariffs by the U.S.
The speech concluded with a strong declaration of support for the president, chanted by the crowd gathered in the Zócalo of the capital, where Sheinbaum was accompanied by governors, members of her cabinet, and representatives of Congress.
